We take walking on two legs for granted. To us, it comes easily—at least, it does once we know how to walk.

Have you ever watched a baby learn to walk? It takes a long time. Muscles in the legs and tummy have to get strong little by little. Only then can they support a person’s top-heavy body. Over many months, a new walker learns the very delicate balance required of standing up and walking on two legs. Machines still can’t do this well. Even the most advanced humanoid (people-shaped) robots tumble over onto the ground! It’s funny to watch—but not so funny for engineers trying to crack the bipedal (two-legged) robot puzzle.

Scientists study animals for inspiration when building robots. They want to find out how animals stay upright, walk without running into things, use energy, and protect their legs from injury. The researchers are learning that the first successful two-legged robots might not end up looking much like people at all. Their calculations produced legs like a bird’s. We can look at Cassie’s design and say something we say a lot: God thought of it first!

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! ― Romans 11:33

If you’ve read the accounts about Jesus in the Bible, you know things change when He comes around. Dead people come back to life. Sick people become healthy again. People who can’t walk suddenly start to leap around. When you think about all that, you realize more about how truly powerful Jesus is. He tells the lame man, “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” (Matthew 9:6) Immediately, the man’s legs work. What a miracle! This makes it more amazing: The man knows how to walk and balance right away!
