Every year, wild ponies are herded from Assateague Island across the channel to Chincoteague, Virginia, so a select group can be auctioned. Siblings Paul and Maureen work to earn money to buy a mare named Phantom on Pony Penning Day. They manage to gain both Phantom and her gentle foal, Misty. But when Phantom shows distress at being separated from her herd, the children must make a difficult choice.
