Timothy Lyndsay Shaddock set sail in the Pacific Ocean. His dog Bella came aboard too. Three months later, they were still adrift on the sea. That was NOT the plan!

Mr. Shaddock is from Australia. He and Bella started their trip in La Paz, Mexico. They were headed to French Polynesia . . . until a storm hit. The storm damaged his boat, which is named Aloha Toa. Its electronics were wiped out. Mr. Shaddock couldn’t call for help. He and Bella survived on rainwater and raw fish. The two desperately needed a rescue.

Then came the Mexican tuna boat.

Mr. Shaddock and Bella were about 1,200 miles from land. The crew of a boat from the Grupomar fishing company spotted them.

Mr. Shaddock and Bella were in desperate need. They had no food or shelter. The tuna boat crew gave them medical attention, food, and water.

Antonio Suárez Gutiérrez is Grupomar’s founder and president. He says he is proud of his crew. He praises them for saving the life of someone in trouble.

In photos of the rescue, a smiling, bearded, and thin Mr. Shaddock is seen with a blood pressure cuff around his arm. He holds a box of pain medication inside the fishing boat’s cabin. In other photos, Bella is stretched out on the deck.

“I’ve been through a very difficult ordeal at sea,” says Mr. Shaddock. “I’m just needing rest and good food. Otherwise, I’m in very good health.”
