You can still travel on big ships today. Here are three ways.
Ocean Liners. For the most part, people no longer sail on ocean liners. Airplanes have replaced ships for routine travel. But one ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2 (QM2), still sails between England and New York. Like ocean liners in history, the QM2 is a way for ocean-goers to travel in style.
Cargo Ships. Cargo ships, also called freighters, are designed mainly to carry stuff, not people. But people can pay to ride along. You could hop on a 100,000-ton freighter with just five other passengers! You might get to keep the ship’s crew company and share meals with them. Freighters don’t have activities onboard designed for passengers. But they do give people an opportunity for some alone time. Best of all, they depart often and sail all over the world.
Cruise Ships. Cruise ships are very different from the other two kinds of big-ship travel. They don’t pick you up on one side of an ocean and drop you off on another. They take you in a circle! The largest cruise ship in the world, Harmony of the Seas, picks passengers up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and drops them off in the same place. The ship is taller than the Eiffel Tower. It weighs more than 17,000 African elephants. Onboard, you will find water slides, rock climbing walls, areas with living trees and plants, an ice skating rink, and a slide that drops you 10 stories.
