What does it mean to explore a planet like Jupiter? One thing is for sure: It’s nothing like exploring Earth!

Biggest planet. No planet in our solar system is bigger than Jupiter. In fact, all the planets would fit inside it! Earth would fit 1,300 times!

Stripes and rings. Jupiter is covered in thick clouds. Some are red, some are brown, some are yellow, and some are white. These make the planet look striped. Jupiter also has three hard-to-see rings. These rings are made mostly of dust.

Many moons. Scientists think Jupiter has 67 moons. The Juno spacecraft has already captured images of four of these moons dancing around the planet.

Short days, long years. Jupiter spins faster than any other planet in our solar system. A Jupiter day is only 10 hours long! But Jupiter takes almost 12 Earth-years to go around the sun. So if you are 12 Earth-years old, you are only about one year old in Jupiter years.

No breathing, no standing. If you enjoy breathing, Jupiter isn’t the vacation spot for you. The thick clouds around Jupiter are made of poisonous gas and there is no oxygen. You can’t walk along Jupiter’s surface either. Jupiter is made of gas.

Instant weight-gain. How much do you weigh? On Jupiter, you would weigh two and a half times as much.

Storm central. Remember Jupiter’s red-spot storm? It is the biggest hurricane in our solar system. Lightning from Jupiter storms can be 1,000 times stronger than Earth lightning. Imagine a storm like that lasting for hundreds of years!
