Abraham Levy looked across the sea. He couldn’t see the other side. But his boat was rigged with the latest gear for navigation. He had even packed more than 1,000 pounds of food onboard. Mr. Levy was about to cross the entire Atlantic Ocean—in a rowboat!

Mr. Levy sailed from Spain in October 2014. He landed in Mexico five months later. He stood up and waved a Mexican flag. People gathered on shore and cheered. “Bienvenidos!” said one of their banners. In Spanish, that means “Welcome!” After so many days alone at sea, that’s just what Mr. Levy needed!

People like Mr. Levy are professional adventurers. They wonder things like: “Who can cross the ocean fastest?” “Who can cross all alone?” The first people to row across the Atlantic were Norwegian clam-diggers. Their names were Frank Samuelson and George Harbo. The journey took them 55 days. The year was 1896.

Many years later, a boy named John Fairfax read about their trip. In fact, he read it over and over! He tucked a copy of their story under his pillow. John Fairfax wanted to cross the Atlantic too. But he had even bigger plans. He wanted to do it alone. As a man, Mr. Fairfax trained his body carefully. He ran two miles every morning. He swam at the YMCA. He practiced on a rowing machine. In 1969, he finally set sail. It took him 180 days to row from the Canary Islands to Florida—all alone. He was the first!

For years, people have seen crossing the ocean as an exciting challenge. Some adventurers face huge waves and sharks just to get to the other side. The hugeness of the ocean gives us a taste of how powerful God must be. He made the sea with His hands. He controls its mighty waves. It is no trouble for Him!
