Check out that TV commercial! Steam rises from a perfect, glistening Thanksgiving turkey. Don’t you just want to reach into the screen with a fork and steal a bite?

If you could, you would be very disappointed. The shiny turkey is raw! Before the video was taken, a food stylist sprayed the uncooked bird with browning sauce, food coloring, and water. Then he or she blowtorched it to make it look cooked. The steam rising from it actually comes from cigarette smoke! Yuck!

When it comes to food you see on TV or in advertisements, sometimes it’s a good thing that what you see isn’t what you get. Yummy food you order in a restaurant doesn’t always look yummy in pictures. Food stylists have to make it look that way. These designers have lots of tricks up their sleeves. They want the bubbles in milk, cappuccino, and soda to appear perfectly round. So they make them with soap. They slide pieces of cardboard between stacked pancakes to make sure they stay in an even pile. In drinks, they use acrylic ice cubes that won’t melt under hot camera lights. To make strawberries appear redder, they touch them up with lipstick.

The Singaporean chefs didn’t use any tricks like that, of course. Their food was beautiful—and delicious—on its own. When someone makes a dish so flawless, it shows us God’s grace. Something so perfect gives us a taste of what heaven might be like. There, we will experience all the perfection, peace, and beauty we were made for. Imagine what food might taste like there!
