On July 2, 1937, clouds hung low in the sky. Amelia Earhart’s plane, the Lockheed Electra 10E, hovered above the Pacific Ocean. It was running low on fuel. A nearby Coast Guard ship received Ms. Earhart’s call. She sounded worried. The Electra needed help.
Then the messages stopped. The Electra crashed into the sea. It sunk there. Ms. Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan would never be heard from again.
At least, that’s what most people think happened. But not everyone agrees. Remember The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR)? In 2012, members of that group found a tiny jar. It was on Nikumaroro Island. They believe it may have been filled with Dr. Berry's Freckle Ointment. The ointment was once used to make freckles fade. Ms. Earhart had freckles. She didn’t like them one bit. Could the jar have belonged to her? Did she land on the island? For decades, TIGHAR has tried to prove that she did.
An Australian researcher has a different idea. Years ago, the Australian military found wreckage on an island in Papua New Guinea. He believes the rubble might belong to Ms. Earhart’s plane. But locals of Mili Atoll will tell you something else. They say Ms. Earhart crashed on one of their islands. According to them, the Japanese took Ms. Earhart and Mr. Noonan prisoner. They say the two died in Japan.
No one seems to know the whole story. As far as we know, no person saw the plane go down. But someone saw the whole thing happen—God. He knows everything. He sees everything. There are no mysteries to Him!
