My Little Pony, Transformers, pogo stick, PEZ dispensers, and the beloved corn popper. What do these playthings have in common? They’ve all almost reached the National Toy Hall of Fame. But none have yet made it in. That’s why they’re known as the “forgotten five.”

The National Toy Hall of Fame is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Most years, three toys earn a spot. The honor comes from the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. Past winners include Hot Wheels, Barbie, and LEGO.

But this year, the museum will accept a fourth winner. The toy will come from the “forgotten five.”

What are these misfit toys? We bet you’ll recognize some of them:

Transformers

These plastic action figures shape-shift from robot to vehicle. Toy company Hasbro released the first Transformers in the 1980s. These ’bots now star in comic books, cartoons, and movies.

Did you know Transformers didn’t begin in the United States? The idea started with Japanese toy lines Diaclone and Micro Change.

Pogo Stick

Boing! The pogo stick’s metal spring gives this toy its bounce. The idea may have come from an 1891 patent for spring-loaded stilts. The first actual pogo stick arrived in the early 1900s. There’s disagreement about the origin of the name “pogo.”

Today, some people use high-powered pogo sticks for an extreme sport called “Xpogo.”

Fisher-Price Corn Popper

The Corn Popper appeared in 1957. You might not know the name. But do you recognize it? Maybe you pushed one of these as a toddler. When the wheels turn, plastic balls bounce like popping popcorn. This toy helps babies learn to walk.

PEZ

PEZ candies come from Austria. They started out in 1927 as peppermints. (In fact, PEZ is short for “pfefferminz,” the German word for “peppermint.”) PEZ dispensers, called “regulars,” first appeared in the 1940s. Years later, they would take the shape of pop culture characters from Looney Tunes, Star Wars, and more.

My Little Pony

These plastic ponies feature brushable manes and tails. Hasbro created the first My Little Pony figures in 1981. At the height of their popularity, they even outsold Barbie. The ponies appear in cartoons and movies. (They even had a comic book adventure with the Transformers!)

Everyone feels forgotten or left out sometimes. But God invites all into His family. God’s kingdom isn’t like a Hall of Fame, where you have to “earn your place.” Jesus already earned a place for you.

If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? — Matthew 18:12
