Eureka! Officials in Hong Kong announced the discovery of dinosaur fossils in the region for the first time.
Hong Kong is a city in eastern Asia. It is made of a peninsula and a group of islands. More than seven million people live there. It’s one of the busiest, most crowded places in the world. It was once a British territory. Now Hong Kong belongs to the People’s Republic of China.
The dino bones weren’t in the middle of the busy city. People uncovered them on a remote island where no one lives.
Paleontologists say the fossils belonged to a large dinosaur. What kind of dinosaur? They will need to study the fossils more to be sure.
What happened to the dinosaur? Here’s the best guess so far. It died. Sand and gravel buried it. A large flood washed the dinosaur to the surface. Then it got buried again.
People found a rock holding the fossils on Port Island. That’s in the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. (A geopark is a protected area. It contains geology that people want to preserve.) Scientists on the China mainland will study the find.
The fossils will go on display Friday in a popular Hong Kong shopping district. As for Port Island, it is now closed to the public. This will give scientists more freedom to dig and investigate.
