Why did the seal cross the road?
No one really knows why. But rescue crews in Northern California do know that this seal was determined to get to the other side.
One very driven seal tried multiple times in two days to cross state Route 37 near San Francisco. She caused traffic jams while drivers waited for her to be removed. She tried to climb a concrete wall on the far side of the highway.
A veterinarian used a tranquilizer to sedate the 900-pound seal, called “Tolay.” Then 12 people loaded the unconscious animal onto a truck. They took her to Point Reyes. She was released back into the wild. But will she stay in the bay now?
California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay was stumped. He looked up and down the road. What was the seal looking for? “There no water or food on the other side,” he says. “There’s nothing.”
