They have had one since World War II, when the Germans called the attacking Marines Devil Dogs. Soon a picture of an English Bulldog showed up on a Marines recruiting poster. The idea stuck.Right now, Smed is taking a turn representing the Marines. He is supposed to encourage them, and maybe even bring them good luck. But he still has to go through training! Doggie training, that is.
