An airport in Istanbul, Turkey, has five new employees. They can’t help you check your baggage. But try rubbing their fuzzy bellies. They’ll give you snuggles and sloppy kisses in return.

Meet Istanbul Airport’s therapy dogs. The five pups roam the halls of one of the world’s busiest airports. They help ease the nerves of anxious travelers.

All five canines are certified therapy dogs. They had months of training. The dogs learned to ignore distracting sights and sounds and to focus on comforting people. They started their jobs in late February.

The team captain, Kuki, is a Lagotto Romagnolo. That’s a curly-coated, medium-sized, Italian retriever breed. Kuki works hard to please. He also enjoys breaks and sometimes plays hooky.

That’s okay. The pups’ schedule says they work from 10 o’clock a.m. to 4 o’clock p.m. Those are the airport’s busiest travel hours. But the team’s veterinarian says each dog’s temperament determines how long he or she stays at work each day.

Handlers lead the dogs around the airport. Alita, a border collie, is Kuki’s teammate. “We are always surrounded by people who are constantly petting her,” says Volkan Gul, Alita’s handler.
