Boston Light is very old. But it is far from being the oldest working lighthouse in the world. The oldest is called the Tower of Hercules. It still stands in Northern Spain, and its most ancient parts date back 1900 years!
People have worked hard for thousands of years to keep sailors safe. At first, lighthouses got their light from wood fires. Later, they burned kerosene, coal, and whale oil. In 1822, a new invention made lighthouses work much better: the Fresnel lens. The Fresnel lens uses prisms to magnify a little bit of light into a lot of light. Boston Light has a Fresnel lens. It causes light to travel 27 miles across the sea.
The Bible talks a lot about light. It says God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Christians are the light of the world. God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. God calls His people out of darkness into His marvelous light. Those are just a few examples. You might be able to think of many, many more! Do lighthouses make you think about the truth God tells us? Just like lighthouses save sailors from dangerous rocky shores, God’s truth guides us away from the dangers of sin. If you ever lose your way, you can look to Him!
