When you were a newborn baby, your brain weighed a little less than a pound. When you’re a grownup, it will weigh around three pounds. It’s made of water, fat, and protein with just a dash of sugar and salt. And it does just about everything.

At least, it tells everything else in your body what to do. The brain sends signals along your spine through your nerves. Your brain will continue to develop until you are about 25 years old. Then the very front of your brain—the part that reasons and makes decisions—will be done “cooking.” Ding!

  • The cerebrum is the front of the brain—the biggest part. It makes you move and keeps your body at the right temperature. It also makes you able to talk, make decisions, solve problems, feel emotions, learn, see, and hear.
  • The brainstem, in the middle of the brain, connects the cerebrum to the spinal cord. It has loads of responsibility. It enables you to create tears, chew, blink, breathe, and much more.
  • The cerebellum lies at the back of your head. It’s about the size of a fist. It allows you to move your muscles and balance. Scientists are studying how it might influence thinking and emotions too.

Be Kind to Your Mind

God made physical brains to need cleaning and restoration. He created processes like the glymphatic system to refresh them. You can keep your brain healthy by getting enough rest, exercise, and healthy food. It helps to use your brain too. Read, do puzzles, and solve problems.

The Bible talks about caring for your mind—the spiritual kind. Prayer, obedience, and repentance are a lot like the glymphatic system for your spiritual mind.

Be transformed by the renewal of your mind. — Romans 12:2
