How does a meal of meal worms sound? Would you like some crickets and caterpillars on the side?
The United Nations is trying to get more people to eat bugs. That’s right — EAT them. Bugs contain protein just like other animals do. But bugs don’t take up lots of space like normal livestock. They might be easier for people in poor places to raise. Could bugs help solve nutrition problems around the world? Maybe, if people were actually willing to eat them!
Entrepreneurs take risks to start businesses. Entomologists study insects. So what do “entopreneurs” do? You got it—entopreneurs start businesses that have to do with selling bugs for food. There are more than 1,900 edible insect species in the world. People in many countries already have bugs on the menu! But how can someone make a plate full of bugs sound tasty to someone who isn’t used to them?
One entopreneur, Monica Martinez, covers salted crickets in chocolate. Another, Megan Miller, makes cookies from ground-up cricket flour. And guess what? People buy their products! Some entopreneurs have more orders than they can keep up with.
Someone in the Bible ate bugs too. Can you think of who? You can check in Matthew 3:4.
