Birds of a feather . . . flee together?

That seems to be the case in Seahorse Key, Florida. Usually the island is alive with the sounds of thousands of birds. For decades, it has served as a sanctuary for them. It has protected birds like blue herons, spoonbills, egrets, and pelicans from hunters who want their feathers.

But one day in May, the island went quiet. Nests were empty. Broken eggs scattered on the ground. Where had all the birds gone? Why would so many leave at once?

Scientists worked hard to discover the answers. They checked the island for diseases or predators. But they found nothing out of the ordinary. Two months later, they are still scratching their heads!

I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. —Psalm 50:11
