The Archinacos have been thinking about getting a new cat. But a cougar isn’t what they had in mind!

A cougar camped under the couple’s Los Angeles house for days. Authorities tried everything they could think of to get him out. They poked him gently with a long prod. They used a tennis ball cannon, a trick that sometimes works on coyotes. But the commotion of raining balls didn’t make the cougar stir. They fired small beanbags toward him. Still, the cat wouldn’t budge. “I don't think he's going to come out,” Mr. Archinaco said. “He thinks this is his den."

Workers found the cougar on Monday. They were installing a home security system. The cougar has lived in a nearby area for several years. He is famous for coming from the Santa Monica Mountains—crossing two freeways on his trip. Known as P-22, the cougar had a disease called mange last year. He also survived a meal of rat poison. Now P-22 appears healthy again—and he’s ready for some peace and quiet!

On Monday, wildlife officials finally decided to just wait. On Tuesday, the cougar wandered out on his own.
