Carmen Herrera started painting 80 years ago. But no one bought one of her works. Ms. Herrera kept painting anyway. She was 89 years old when she made her first sale. Now that’s perseverance!

Ms. Herrera was born in Cuba. She worked hard to become a painter. She studied art as a little girl. Then she traveled to Paris and New York to practice more. Now Ms. Herrera’s abstract artwork is quite famous. Her most expensive work sold for $170,500!

On Sunday, May 31, Ms. Herrera turned 100. Her body hurts with arthritis. She usually has to stay home. Does that stop her from painting? No way! She says she’s still bursting with ideas she wants to paint.
