For composer Frédéric Chopin, home is where the heart is—literally.
Frédéric Chopin was born in Poland in 1810. He was a great musician even as a little boy. People started calling him “a second Mozart.” At 20, Chopin decided to leave the country he loved. He wanted to make music in big European cities.
Chopin composed masterpieces. He invented new forms. But he was very ill. He knew he would soon die. He asked that after he died his heart be taken back to Poland and buried.
Getting his heart into Poland wasn’t easy! It was smuggled past border guards. Eventually it was buried in an urn at Warsaw's Holy Cross Church. And in April 2014, scientists dug the heart up. They took more than 1,000 photos of what they found inside the urn. They poured hot wax inside to make the heart last even longer. They kept their dig a secret. People are just finding out about it.
“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” —Matthew 6:20-21
