BOOM!
First, large chunks of debris fell into a lava lake in Hawaii. Then came the boom. Molten lava and rocks flew through the air. Every time a rock falls into the lava lake, it causes a reaction. One scientist compared it to hitting a champagne bottle with a hammer.
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has been erupting for ages. This explosion happened on May 3. It is little compared to some other explosions. But if you stood nearby, you wouldn’t think it was little! The lava sprung 285 feet into the air.
Last year, Mount Kilauea’s lava harmed nearby homes. But not this time. This time visitors are eager to see it boil!
