What happens when a monkey gets a lawyer? You might not want to know!

Sandra the orangutan has lived 20 years at a zoo in Argentina. A court decided that she has some of the same legal rights humans have. In fact, the court called Sandra a “non-human person.” What does that mean?

To Sandra’s lawyer, it means the monkey shouldn’t be kept in a cage against her will. We don’t keep humans in cages, he says. Why should we keep monkeys there?

As Christians, we should never be cruel to animals. But monkeys are just that—animals. They are not people, no matter what a court decides. If we start applying people-laws to animals, we might wind up with a big mess!

“And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.” —Genesis 1:24
