In parts of Africa, many people get infections from tiny worms. Scientists can find these worms in an infected person’s blood. YUCK!

Worse than yuck—these infections can be very, very dangerous. Worse than that, there aren’t enough doctors and microscopes to help check for the disease.

Until now. Researchers at the University of California, Berkely, invented something new. Now a person can prick their finger and put a drop of blood into a tube. Next the tube slides into a special

base attached to

a smartphone. An app on the phone can tell whether the blood is infected. That will save doctors lots of work, money, and time. Is there anything a smartphone can’t do?
