What do you think this sockeye salmon is thinking? “Save me, save me!” perhaps?
In the early 1990s, Idaho’s Snake River almost ran out of sockeye salmon. Then people raised new sockeyes, like this one, in places called hatcheries. They bred salmon carefully. That gave the salmon the best chance of surviving.
Last fall, their work finally paid off. About 1,500 salmon traveled from the Pacific Ocean back to Idaho. At last, the fish were surviving on their own.
But the work to save the sockeye isn’t finished yet. Now scientists want to spread the salmon to lakes and rivers nearby too. The plan could take 50 to 100 years!
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea.” —Genesis 1:26
