A parking lot is no place to bury a king! But that’s where researchers found the bones of King Richard III. He’s been down there for a long time! He reigned in England from 1483 to 1485.
Shakespeare wrote a play about King Richard III. That was 100 years after he died. The play showed King Richard as tyrant—a cruel and unfair ruler. But is that who Richard really was? History doesn’t say so. And the new bones—discovered in 2012—show us even more about this mysterious king.
Today’s scientists don’t have to guess about bones. They can whip out their DNA testing kits. That’s how they know the bones are Richard’s. They are more than 99 percent certain.
King Richard was known to have back trouble. And guess what? His back bones were twisted. The genes from his bones showed 96 percent probability that he had blue eyes. That matches up with an old portrait of Richard. Scientist can even tell that he probably had blonde hair as a boy.
Centuries later, we can still read the genetic code God made for King Richard. Can you imagine how carefully and perfectly He designed every one of us?For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.—Psalm 139:13
